Fender Skirts For RV Vehicles and Trailers

By John Loewen

People may ask what a fender skirt is. Fender skirts are additions for fenders that provide more protection for vehicles, trailers, fifth wheels as well as motor homes. Some of these may already have these equipped, others you may have to put them on once you buy them. There are also times when you may need to purchase replacement parts when yours get damaged. Some people even buy them for the added pizazz that having chrome parts on your vehicle can offer.

There are single axle skirts, as well as dual axle skirts. You can also purchase flared out products to add a little extra style to your ride. What do these actually do? Well for one thing, they can protect the outside of you vehicle, or recreation unit from getting damaged from rocks and other debris that can get kicked up and out by your wheels. They also help protect against mud and dirt, which can be a problem when traveling on rainy days.

Some fender skirts also keep rocks and other small objects from rattling around inside the fender, and deflect them back down to the ground, This is a good idea, because you wouldn't want rocks continuously smacking into the tires, or putting dents in your fender, and the noise would be irritating at the very least. Because they are made to match up perfectly with your vehicle or RV, there is no worry about space or vibration in between the fender skirt and fender or outside of what you are trying to protect.

For trailers and other recreation applications, fender skirts are made from high impact ABS plastic, which can withstand much abuse. Most are available in white, or off white colors, and attach easily to existing fender wells. You can even get them customized for your own individual needs. You can order the same for your vehicle, but you can also order them in metal and chrome. There are some things that you need to do before ordering so that you get the right one the first time you order it.

The first place to start is by measuring the area where you need the fender skirt. You need the height and length, and then you need to write down where the existing bolt holes are, so the new unit matches up correctly. If you have a model number on the one that needs replacement, this will help you find the exact part you need.

It is a good idea to shop around for price and materials that are used, and if there is any warranty included. Then you have to consider shipping costs, as well as the company's policy on returns. While everyone hopes that they will get the part they need, sometimes there is a mix up when ordering, or even breakage in transit. Being able to send them pack without having to pay extra is good.

The other thing you have to think about when buying fender skirts is price. Your average cost for a single axle model is around $100, but this price can go up depending on the style of skirt. Straight angles and simple designs are going to be cheapest; the more elaborate, the more expensive they will be.
